Benefits of a Green Wall
There are several benefits to creating a green wall:
- Noise reduction - A green wall acts as a sound barrier because it absorbs 41% of the noise in a building. A building surrounded by green walls is nearly noiseless.
- Air purification - Green walls are air filters as they eliminate toxins, which can create a non-conducive environment to the employees. Due to proper air quality in the workplace, the workers are productive.
- Regulated temperatures - When the weather is too hot or too cold, you can’t work efficiently. Green walls absorb sunlight, which means that the building will be cool even when it is hot. During the cold season, the wall reduces energy loss, which ensures that there is warmth.
How Green Walls Work
The green wall technology is gradually improving because there are two types of irrigation systems that help the plants grow. The first is recirculating the irrigation system. For this, there has to be an irrigation tank beneath the wall. Tanks have to be full to provide an adequate supply of water to the plants. When gravity pulls water downward, water is directed to the irrigation tank to be used again.
The second is the direct irrigation system. There is no need to have a tank as the water is outsourced. Water pulled down by gravity is not used over again because it is directed to the sewer drain.
Amount of CO2 Absorbed by a Green Wall
Since the plants act as air filters, they convert CO2 into oxygen. The live walls absorb 2.3 kilograms of CO2 from the air per year and produce 1.7 kilograms.
Plants Suitable for a Living Wall
When choosing plants, make sure to consider the shape, texture, and color. There is a wide range of plants that you can choose from for your green wall, including small shrubs, grass, herbs, and herbaceous perennials. To help you pick plants suitable for your green wall, consider consulting with a garden nursery.
Types of Green Walls
There are a couple of types of green walls:
- Direct greening - For this type of green wall, climber plants are installed at the building’s base. As the plants grow, they attach themselves to the wall and cover the entire space. You should know that this type of green wall is not appropriate for every building.
- Indirect greening – In this type, the plants do not attach to the wall as meshes or cables support them. The climbing plants will need the provision of nutrients and an adequate water supply. Indirect greening can also be identified as a living wall system.
To maintain a healthy green wall, ensure that the plants you select are suitable for the surrounding climate. Maintenance is also essential to ensure that the plants do not dry. Shop our products below to get started building your green outdoor living wall.
